I completely agree with the last line of this post. Reducing teen pregnancy is far more complicated than we think. I think one of the most important things to do that many people overlook because it is uncomfortable is having conversations with teens about sex. I've recently come across the writings of Dr. Meg Meeker, a great source on how to talk to teens about sex. The most recent book I read is Your Kids at Risk: How Teen Sex Threatens Our Sons and Daughters. I highly recommend to anyone with teens.

Bottom line is that you can't stop teens from having sex because it's a natural characteristic of teenage sexual development. You can make it more dangerous by denying them information that could keep them safe when having sex. And you could go on a sexual programming witch hunt with absolutely no results, because exposure means nothing if someone has a well-developed sense of judgment.

Basically, this study feels more like intentional media-grabbing sensationalism than serious research.

This article was interesting because I have some friends dealing with teen pregnancy's right now. It is very time demanding and stressful on them. In reality, there is no way of stopping pre-marital sex, it is part of growing up. I agree that the best solution is to have safe sex (condoms, birth control). I don't know if I believe the correlation with watching T.V. Every teen is different, wouldn't you think getting pregnant has more to do with how they were brought up?

I believe that teens have influence everywhere around them, so saying that what is on tv doesn't matter isn't necessarily a good conclusion because you want to reduce the amount they see. Evangelistic teens bring non-christian friends to church. I don't think saying evangelistic teens are more likely to have sex is quite the proper way to say it. I agree tv isn't the strongest influence, but it should still be considered as a factor in higher sexual activity.

I completely agree with Sternheimer's correlation between television and teen pregnancies. Television can impact the way human’s view the world and influence their ways of thinking, particularly teenagers. Entertainment news especially shows young celebrity teens pregnant, such as Jamie-Lynn Spears, (Britney Spears’ younger sister) being pregnant and acting happy and excited about it; making it seem as though being a pregnant teen is “a cool thing to do.” Yet, what most teens do not realize is that pregnant celebrity teens have more than enough resources and money to properly support a child, where as they most likely do not. It is important for society to remember though that stopping teens from engaging in sexual activity in highly unlikely and stopping television programs from advertising sex is even more highly unlikely. So instead of educating teens about abstinence or not educating them at all about sex, or hoping that television programs will stop making sexual references (because in time it will only get worse), schools as well as teen parents should offer more knowledge to them about the use of birth control, condoms, and other ways that can prevent pregnancy. I am not saying that this will stop teen pregnancies, but at least it will offer them more options to look at.

Really nice work! Your article is unique, informative, interesting and is captivating attention of the readers. You have emphasized on a good point, only because it's true that teen pregnancy is a lot higher. I went through this myself, being pregnant as a teen. I am still a teen, but I think this article reminded my of family, because that's what i'm reading about in my Sociology class. When you get pregnant, by television, being influenced. However, it may happen. It starts a family, unless you have an abortion. It's common sense not to though. I see it, as God giving you a blessing, he's given you the gift of a family, with unconditional love.
Amazing post.
